Omdurman
Omdurman is a city on the west bank of the Nile opposite Khartoum, part of Sudan's largest urban area. The Mahdi made it his base during the siege of Khartoum, and his successor the Khalifa Abdallahi made it the capital of the Mahdist State, where the Mahdi's tomb was built. On 2 September 1898 Kitchener's Anglo-Egyptian army destroyed the Mahdist forces at nearby Karari, in the Battle of Omdurman.
