Mahdist State

1874–1898 (in Darfur) · 19th century · Also known as Mahdist interregnum, Mahdist

The Mahdist State was the state founded in Sudan by Muhammad Ahmad, who proclaimed himself the Mahdi in 1881, and continued under his successor the Khalifa Abdallahi. Following al-Zubayr's defeat of the Darfur sultan in 1874, Darfur was absorbed by the Mahdists, extinguishing Keira authority. The site refers to the period from 1874 to 1898 in Darfur as the Mahdist interregnum.
