Mahdist War
The Mahdist War was fought from 1881 to 1899 in Sudan between the followers of Muhammad Ahmad, who proclaimed himself the Mahdi, and the Egyptian government backed by Britain. The Mahdists took Khartoum in 1885, killing Charles Gordon, and built their own state, which an Anglo-Egyptian army under Herbert Kitchener destroyed at Omdurman in 1898.
