Albanian Republic

1925 CE – 1928 CE · capital Tirana

Albania's first republic, a presidential regime built by Ahmet Zogu that drew the country closely towards Fascist Italy.

Origins

Ahmet Zogu, a chieftain from Mat, was driven out by Fan Noli's June Revolution of 1924 but returned in December with support from the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and White Russian mercenaries. In January 1925 a constituent assembly abolished the Principality of Albania and proclaimed a republic with Tirana as capital, electing Zogu president for seven years.

Rule and society

The 1925 statute gave the president sweeping powers over the government, army and legislation. Zogu disarmed clans, suppressed opponents and built roads and a gendarmerie. Short of money, he turned to Italy: an Italian-controlled national bank and development company were founded, and the Treaties of Tirana of 1926 and 1927 made Albania an Italian ally.

Decline and legacy

On 1 September 1928 a constituent assembly proclaimed Albania a monarchy, and Zogu became King Zog I of the Albanian Kingdom. The new constitution kept much of the presidential system but made the office hereditary, and the dependence on Italian money continued.
