Zog I, born Ahmet Zogu, was an Albanian chieftain from Mat who dominated his country's politics between the wars. He overthrew Fan Noli's government in December 1924, became president of the Albanian Republic in 1925 and proclaimed himself King of the Albanians in 1928. He drew Albania closely towards Fascist Italy, which invaded in April 1939 and drove him into exile.
