Albanians
The Albanians are a people of the western Balkans who speak the Albanian language. Under the Ottoman Empire many converted to Islam and served in the army and administration. In the empire's last decades, Albanian national movements and revolts contributed to the loss of Ottoman territory in the Balkans, and Albania declared independence in 1912.
