Sasanian Empire
The Sasanian Empire was the last pre-Islamic Persian empire, founded by Ardashir I in the third century CE after overthrowing the Parthian Empire. Centred on Ctesiphon, it was a great rival of Rome and Byzantium, with Zoroastrianism as its state religion. It fell to the Arab conquests of the Rashidun Caliphate in the mid-seventh century, but its administration and culture strongly influenced the Umayyad and Abbasid caliphates.
