Ctesiphon
Ctesiphon was a city on the Tigris River in central Iraq, near present-day Baghdad. It was the capital of the Parthian Empire and then of the Sasanian Empire, whose great vaulted palace hall, the Taq Kasra, still partly stands. Captured by the Arabs in the 630s, it declined after the Abbasid Caliphate founded Baghdad nearby.
