Auguste de Marmont

1774–1852 · 19th century · Also known as Duke of Ragusa, Auguste Frédéric Louis Viesse de Marmont

Auguste de Marmont was a French general and Marshal of the Empire under Napoleon. As commander in Dalmatia he abolished the Republic of Poljica in 1807 and the Republic of Ragusa in 1808, receiving the title Duke of Ragusa, and governed the Illyrian Provinces from 1809 to 1811. His surrender of Paris in 1814 was long seen as betrayal.
