Illyrian Provinces
The Illyrian Provinces were a region of the French Empire created by Napoleon in 1809, after the Treaty of Schönbrunn, from Austrian lands in Carniola, Carinthia, Istria and Croatia together with Dalmatia and Ragusa. With their capital at Ljubljana and governors including Auguste de Marmont, they received French law and administration and schools teaching in local languages. Austria reoccupied them in 1813–1814.
