Auguste Comte

1798–1857 · 19th century

Auguste Comte was a French philosopher of the nineteenth century and the founder of positivism, which emphasised science, order and progress. His ideas were very influential among Brazilian army officers and engineers in the later Brazilian Empire. Positivist officers played a role in the overthrow of the monarchy in 1889, and the motto 'Order and Progress' on the Brazilian flag reflects his influence.
