French protectorate of Laos
Origins
After the Paknam incident of 1893, France forced Siam to cede the territories east of the Mekong. The French explorer and consul Auguste Pavie had already won the loyalty of the Kingdom of Luang Phrabang. In 1899 the Lao territories were organised as a single unit under a résident supérieur at Vientiane.
Rule and society
France ruled the kingdom of Luang Phrabang as a protectorate and the rest of Laos directly, through provinces with French officials and Vietnamese clerks. Laos was a thinly populated backwater of French Indochina, with taxes, corvée labour and some tin mining. Revolts by upland peoples such as the Hmong and Lao Theung broke out in 1901 to 1936.
Decline and legacy
Japan ended French rule in 1945, and the Lao Issara declared independence. France returned in 1946, and in 1947 Laos became a constitutional monarchy, the Kingdom of Laos, within the French Union, gaining full independence in 1953.
