Hmong people
The Hmong are an ethnic group of the mountains of southern China, northern Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, speaking Hmongic languages. Many migrated south from China in the 18th and 19th centuries and settled in the highlands of northern Laos, where they grew rice and opium. During the Laotian Civil War many Hmong fought on the royalist side with American support, and large numbers left as refugees after 1975.
