Khmu people

The Khmu are an Austroasiatic-speaking people of northern Laos and neighbouring parts of Vietnam, Thailand and China. Regarded as among the earliest inhabitants of the region, they were long subordinate to the Lao kingdoms, and they had a ritual role at the royal court of Luang Prabang acknowledging their status as first inhabitants. They are the largest upland Lao Theung group in Laos.
