Bantustan

Also known as homeland

A Bantustan, or homeland, was a territory set aside for Black South Africans of a particular ethnic group under apartheid. The policy, developed under Hendrik Verwoerd, aimed to strip Black South Africans of South African citizenship by attaching them to ten homelands, four of which, Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda and Ciskei, were declared independent but never internationally recognised. All were reincorporated into South Africa in 1994.
