Bophuthatswana

1977–1994 · 20th century

Bophuthatswana was a Bantustan created by apartheid South Africa for Tswana-speaking people, declared independent in 1977 but recognised by no country other than South Africa. It consisted of several separate enclaves, with its capital at Mmabatho, and was ruled by Lucas Mangope. After his overthrow in March 1994 it was reincorporated into South Africa.
