Totonacs
The Totonacs are an indigenous people of the Gulf Coast of Mexico, centred on the region of present-day Veracruz, whose city of Cempoala was subject to Aztec tribute. When the Spanish landed in 1519 the Totonacs allied with them against the Mexica. Accounts of the Aztec Empire list the Totonacs among the subject peoples who joined the siege of Tenochtitlan to destroy the power that had extracted tribute from them.
