Pánfilo de Narváez

c. 1478–1528 · 16th century

Pánfilo de Narváez was a Spanish conquistador who took part in the conquest of Cuba. In 1520 the governor of Cuba sent him to Mexico with a large force to arrest Hernán Cortés, but Cortés surprised him at Cempoala, captured him and won over most of his men. In 1527 he led an expedition to Florida that ended in disaster; he was lost at sea in 1528, and only four men, including Cabeza de Vaca, survived.
