Apalachee chiefdom
Origins
The Apalachee emerged from the Fort Walton culture, the Mississippian tradition of the region between the Aucilla and Ochlockonee rivers around modern Tallahassee, from around 1100. The Lake Jackson mounds were an early centre. When Pánfilo de Narváez arrived in 1528 and Hernando de Soto wintered at their capital, Anhaica, in 1539 to 1540, the Apalachee were populous and warlike.
Rule and society
Chiefs ruled from towns with mounds and plazas, and the fertile red clay hills produced large maize surpluses. The Apalachee were famous for a ball game with ritual meaning. Franciscan missions began in 1633, and many Apalachee became Catholic, sending maize and labour to St Augustine. Mission San Luis de Talimali, founded in 1656, became the capital of western Spanish Florida, housing Apalachee leaders alongside Spanish soldiers.
Decline and legacy
In 1704 Carolina's former governor James Moore and Muscogee allies destroyed most missions, killing or enslaving thousands. Survivors scattered to Pensacola, to Mobile in French Louisiana, or joined the Muscogee. Descendants survive in Louisiana as the Talimali Band of Apalachee.
