Cochinchina campaign

1858–1862 · 19th century

The Cochinchina campaign was a war fought from 1858 to 1862 by France and Spain against the Nguyễn dynasty of Vietnam. Begun as a punitive expedition over the persecution of Catholic missionaries, it ended with the Treaty of Saigon (1862), by which Vietnam ceded three southern provinces, the beginning of French Cochinchina and of French rule in Indochina.
