Asiatic Vespers

88 BCE · 1st century BCE · Also known as Ephesian Vespers

The Asiatic Vespers was the massacre of Romans and Italians in the province of Asia and neighbouring regions ordered by Mithridates VI of Pontus in 88 BCE, during the First Mithridatic War. Ancient writers put the number of dead at 80,000 or more. Many Greek cities, resentful of Roman tax-farmers and moneylenders, carried out the order, and the massacre made the war a bitter struggle.
