Asiento
The asiento was a contract granted by the Spanish crown giving a person or company the right to supply enslaved Africans to Spanish America. In 1713 the Treaty of Utrecht granted the asiento to Britain, which passed it to the South Sea Company. It strengthened Britain's role in the Atlantic slave trade during the formative period of the British Empire.
