Newfoundland
Newfoundland is a large island off the east coast of North America. Accounts of the British Empire place the empire's conventional founding moment at Sir Humphrey Gilbert's formal claim of Newfoundland in 1583. Gilbert was lost at sea on the return voyage and no settlers were left, but the claim marked England's first step towards overseas empire.
