Institution
Bank of England
The Bank of England was founded in 1694 to lend money to the English government, primarily to finance war against France. It managed government debt and became the central bank of the United Kingdom. Its creation allowed Britain to borrow on a large scale, which is seen as a key foundation of the British Empire's military and commercial power.
