Army of the Andes

The Army of the Andes was the force raised by José de San Martín in Mendoza, in the province of Cuyo, between 1814 and 1817. In January and February 1817 it crossed the Andes in several columns and defeated the royalists at Chacabuco, and in 1818 it won the Battle of Maipú, securing Chilean independence. It later formed the core of the expedition that liberated Peru.
