Articles of Union (1964)
The Articles of Union were the agreement signed on 22 April 1964 by Julius Nyerere of Tanganyika and Abeid Karume of Zanzibar, uniting the two states as the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar from 26 April 1964, renamed Tanzania later that year. They reserved certain matters to the union government while Zanzibar kept its own government for other affairs, an arrangement that remains a source of political tension.
