Articles of Confederation

1781–1789 · 18th century

The Articles of Confederation were the first constitution of the United States, adopted by the Continental Congress in 1777 and in force from 1781 to 1789. They created a loose league of sovereign states with a single-chamber Congress that could not levy taxes or regulate trade, weaknesses that led to the Constitutional Convention of 1787.
