Artibonite

Also known as Artibonite River, Artibonite Valley

The Artibonite is the longest river of Hispaniola, rising in the Dominican Republic and flowing about 320 km west through Haiti to the Gulf of Gonâve. Its broad valley is Haiti's main rice-growing region, and it gives its name to the Artibonite department, whose capital is Gonaïves. Dessalines built his fortified capital at Marchand in the valley, and the river later formed the frontier between Christophe's north and Pétion's south.
