Arzhan kurgans

9th–7th century BCE · 9th century BCE

The Arzhan kurgans are royal burial mounds in the Uyuk valley of Tuva, in southern Siberia. Arzhan 1, of the late ninth or eighth century BCE, is one of the earliest known Scythian-type elite burials, with well over a hundred sacrificed horses. Arzhan 2, of the seventh century BCE and excavated in 2000–2004, held an undisturbed royal couple with some 5,700 gold objects in animal style.
