Asander (Bosporan king)

d. c. 17 BCE · 1st century BCE

Asander was ruler of the Bosporan Kingdom from 47 BCE until about 17 BCE. Left in charge of the Bosporus by Pharnaces II, he rebelled against him, and after Pharnaces' defeat by Julius Caesar at Zela he fought and killed him and seized power, marrying Pharnaces' daughter Dynamis to strengthen his claim. Recognised by Rome, he first ruled as archon and later as king.
