Ascoli Piceno

Also known as Asculum, Asculum Picenum

Ascoli Piceno is a city in the southern Marche, Italy, on the Tronto river. As Asculum it was the chief town of the Picentes, and its massacre of Roman officials in 91 BCE started the Social War; Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo captured it in 89 BCE. Its historic centre, built largely of travertine, is known for the Piazza del Popolo.
