Marche

Also known as the Marches

The Marche is a region of central Italy between the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea, with its capital at Ancona. Most of it belonged to the Papal States from the Middle Ages until 1860, when Piedmontese troops occupied it on their way south to meet Garibaldi, and a plebiscite joined it to the Kingdom of Italy. Urbino, seat of the Montefeltro court and birthplace of Raphael, lies in the region.
