Banda Aceh
Banda Aceh is a port city at the northern tip of Sumatra, Indonesia, near the entrance to the Strait of Malacca. As the capital of the Aceh Sultanate from the sixteenth century it dominated the pepper trade, and under Dutch rule after 1874 it was called Kutaraja. Nearby lay the earlier harbour kingdom of Lamuri. The city was devastated by the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004.
