Basutoland National Council
The Basutoland National Council was a body of chiefs and nominated members created in 1903 to advise the British administration of Basutoland, presided over by the Paramount Chief. It gave chiefs a formal voice in colonial government. Reforms in 1960 added elected members and legislative powers, preparing the way for Lesotho's independence in 1966.
