High Commission Territories

The High Commission Territories were the three British dependencies of Basutoland, the Bechuanaland Protectorate and Swaziland, governed through the British High Commissioner for southern Africa rather than the Colonial Office. South Africa long hoped to absorb them, but Britain refused, and they became independent as Lesotho and Botswana in 1966 and Eswatini in 1968.
