Battle of Cape Passaro

1718 · 18th century · Part of the War of the Quadruple Alliance

The Battle of Cape Passaro was fought on 11 August 1718 off the south-eastern tip of Sicily, where a British fleet under Admiral Sir George Byng destroyed a Spanish fleet supporting Spain's invasion of Sicily. Although Britain and Spain were not yet formally at war, the battle crippled the Spanish navy and helped force Spain to abandon its attempt to recover its former Italian lands.
