Battle of Caporetto

24 October – 19 November 1917 · 20th century · Also known as Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo · Part of the First World War

The Battle of Caporetto was an Austro-Hungarian and German offensive on the Isonzo front, launched on 24 October 1917 near the town of Caporetto, now Kobarid in Slovenia. Using gas, infiltration tactics and surprise, the attackers broke through and drove the Italian army back to the Piave river, taking some 265,000 prisoners. The disaster led to the dismissal of Luigi Cadorna and became a byword in Italy for a crushing defeat.
