Battle of Maserfield

5 August 642 · 7th century

The Battle of Maserfield was fought on 5 August 642 between Penda of Mercia and Oswald of Northumbria, probably at Oswestry in Shropshire. Oswald, the leading Christian king of his day, was killed and his body dismembered, and he was afterwards venerated as a saint and martyr. The victory made Penda the most powerful ruler in England.
