Battle of Salsu

612 · 7th century · Also known as Battle of the Salsu River · Part of the Goguryeo–Sui War

The Battle of Salsu was fought in 612 when Goguryeo forces under Eulji Mundeok destroyed a large Sui army as it retreated across the Salsu river, usually identified with the Chongchon in north-western Korea. Only a few thousand of the Sui soldiers are said to have returned. The defeat ended Emperor Yang's first invasion of Goguryeo and contributed to the fall of the Sui dynasty.
