Battle of Shangi
The Battle of Shangi was fought in 1896 in south-western Rwanda, near Lake Kivu, when a Rwandan army attacked a post set up by the Congo Free State. The Rwandan forces were driven back with heavy losses by rifle fire. The defeat showed the gap in weaponry between African armies and colonial forces and weakened the court shortly before it accepted German protection.
