Battle of the Monongahela
The Battle of the Monongahela was fought on 9 July 1755 near the Monongahela River, east of Fort Duquesne in present-day Pennsylvania. A British and colonial army under General Edward Braddock, marching to take the fort, was ambushed by a smaller force of French troops and Native allies and lost about two-thirds of its men, and Braddock was mortally wounded. George Washington helped lead the retreat.
