Battle of the Muthul

109 BCE · 2nd century BCE · Part of the Jugurthine War

The Battle of the Muthul was fought in 109 BCE near the Muthul River in Numidia between the Roman army of the consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus and King Jugurtha. Jugurtha ambushed the Romans on the march, but after a hard day's fighting Metellus drove off the Numidians. The battle did not end the Jugurthine War, as Jugurtha turned to raids and guerrilla warfare.
