Jugurthine War

112–105 BCE · 2nd century BCE

The Jugurthine War was fought from 112 to 105 BCE between the Roman Republic and Jugurtha, king of Numidia. It began after Jugurtha seized Cirta and killed Adherbal and the Italian traders there, and Roman efforts were long hampered by bribery and defeats. Quintus Caecilius Metellus and then Gaius Marius gained the upper hand, and Jugurtha was finally betrayed to Marius's quaestor Sulla by King Bocchus of Mauretania.
