Jugurtha

c. 160–104 BCE · 2nd century BCE

Jugurtha was king of Numidia, a grandson of Masinissa who seized the whole kingdom after killing one adoptive brother and fighting the other. His massacre of Italian traders at Cirta in 112 BCE led to the Jugurthine War with Rome, which exposed corruption in the Roman Senate. Betrayed to Sulla in 105 BCE by his father-in-law Bocchus I of Mauretania, he was led in Marius's triumph and died in prison in Rome.
