Juba I

c. 85–46 BCE · 1st century BCE · Also known as Juba I of Numidia

Juba I was king of Numidia from about 60 to 46 BCE. In Caesar's civil war he sided with the Pompeians, destroying the army of Caesar's legate Curio on the Bagradas river in 49 BCE, but after the Pompeian defeat at Thapsus in 46 BCE he took his own life. Caesar annexed much of his kingdom as the province of Africa Nova, and his son Juba II was raised in Rome.
