Battle of the Nile

1798 · 18th century · Also known as Battle of Aboukir Bay · Part of the French Revolutionary Wars

The Battle of the Nile was a naval battle fought on 1–3 August 1798 in Aboukir Bay, near Alexandria in Egypt. A British fleet under Horatio Nelson attacked the French fleet that had carried Napoleon Bonaparte's army to Egypt, destroying or capturing eleven of its thirteen ships of the line, including the flagship L'Orient, which exploded. The victory stranded the French army in Egypt and restored British naval dominance in the Mediterranean.
