Battle of Plassey
The Battle of Plassey was fought on 23 June 1757 near Palashi in Bengal, where a British East India Company force under Robert Clive defeated the much larger army of Siraj ud-Daulah, Nawab of Bengal. The outcome was decided largely by the defection of the nawab's commander Mir Jafar, whom the Company then made nawab. The victory gave the Company control of Bengal's revenues and is seen as the beginning of British rule in India.
