Battle of Culloden

1746 · 18th century · Also known as Culloden · Part of the Jacobite rising of 1745

The Battle of Culloden was fought on 16 April 1746 near Inverness, where the government army under the Duke of Cumberland destroyed the Jacobite army of Charles Edward Stuart in less than an hour. It was the last pitched battle fought on British soil. Harsh repression followed, and laws against Highland dress, arms and hereditary jurisdictions broke the power of the clans.
