Robert Clive

1725–1774 · 18th century · Also known as Clive of India

Robert Clive was an officer of the East India Company whose victories in the Carnatic wars checked French power in southern India. His victory at Plassey in 1757 over Siraj ud-Daulah, the nawab of Bengal, made the Company the real power in Bengal, and in 1765 he obtained the diwani of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa.
