Siraj ud-Daulah

1733–1757 · 18th century

Siraj ud-Daulah was the last independent Nawab of Bengal, succeeding his grandfather Alivardi Khan in 1756. In June that year he captured Calcutta from the East India Company, and the deaths of British prisoners in the 'Black Hole' were used to justify reprisals. Betrayed by his commander Mir Jafar, he was defeated by Robert Clive at Plassey in 1757 and was captured and killed soon after.
